Capt. Billy Rotne is a Florida native with
15 years experience fishing inshore in the east central Florida
area. He was born and raised in a house on the water in Daytona
Beach and had his first boat at 10 years of age. Fishing occupied
most of his free time and by the time he was old enough to drive
he was fishing Mosquito Lagoon and the Indian River every time
he got the chance. He became an avid fly fisherman and soon
grew a passion for showing others what this special estuary
had to offer. This passion led to Billy starting his guiding
career. He still lives on the water and fishes daily, the coastal
lifestyle is all Capt. Billy has ever known.
As a child Billy caught his first Redfish at 6 years of age,
and they soon became his favorite fish to target. Not much has
changed as Billy still favors these shallow water copper predators.
They provide a constant challenge for the fly fisherman and
when targeting single fish, each and every fish has its own
approach and style. He believes these are special fish and hopes
to show as many as possible these fish in shallow water and
help protect their future. Capt. Billy is an advocate of "Catch,
Photo, Release", and provides professional digital photography
with a Canon Digital Rebel XTI, because their is nothing worse
than a bad picture of a fish of a lifetime
Capt Billy's first skiff was a Gheenoe at 10 years of age. Since
then he has owned many boats, but once he became and avid fly
fisherman, he knew that their was only one choice of skiffs,
Hells Bay Boatworks. On your trip expect to fish out of one
of the fastest, shallowest, and quietest skiffs on Mosquito
Lagoon. Capt. Billy guides out of a 2005 Hells Bay 17.8 Professional.
This boat is rigged with a 90 HP Mercury motor which gives this
skiff a great deal of versatility. Speed allows you to get from
spot to another much quicker, which adds to your fishing time!
It also allows Capt. Billy to cover more ground during your
trip and to out run thunderstorms which are very common in summer.
It has one of the driest rides of any technical poling skiff,
so even if it gets choppy you can still cross open water in
comfort, but still be able to pole the shallowest flats once
you get there!
The skiff drafts 5 inches with two anglers on board, allowing
you to get to the shallowest redfish Mosquito Lagoon has to
offer. It is also silent from all angles of hull slap so Capt.
Billy can get you closer to the fish, sometimes less than 5
feet. You can always expect the boat will be extremely clean,
well organized, and with plenty of additional storage space
for anything you might bring along such a cooler.
When you book a trip with Capt. Billy, expect only to use the
finest equipment and fish out the finest shallow water skiffs
in the world, Hells Bay Boatworks. Using professional gear and
fishing out of a skiff specially designed to fish super shallow
water is important in Capt. Billy's opinion to giving you the
very best experience Mosquito Lagoon has to offer. Make no compromises!
